HOPE QUEST is a Therapeutic Dungeons and Dragons Workshop where a trained clinician utilizes games (such as Dungeons and Dragons) in a therapeutic setting . Hope quest allows group members to work as a team to solve problems, and also gives an opportunity for individuals to increase social skills, self esteem, frustration tolerance, and emotional adaptability through storytelling and play.
So my kid is just playing a game?
Yes, and no. HOPE QUEST utilizes Critical Core, a game developed by therapists to further develop core social capacities and help kids learn how to be more confident, creative, adaptable and more socially capable. The Core Capacities are a fundamental part of the design of Critical Core, which include emotion regulation, collaboration, planning, perspective taking, and pretend play, which are the building blocks for all social flourishing. The therapist utilizes these core skills within each game play, helping participants build the capacity to connect with others. So, yes! Clients are playing a game but they are doing so in a purposeful way.
We take what we know many teens enjoy, gaming and playing, and use that as a motivation to connect with like minded peers while building core life skills along the way. Dungeons and Dragons provides an adventure-based platform for teens to create a character with traits that align with who they want to be and practice using those qualities in the experiential world our Licensed Therapist strategically creates to maximize every teen’s ability to adopt their ideal qualities as their own. Each game incorporates challenges that mirror real-world experiences which prompts teens to employ adaptive problem solving skills and team work to help expand their core social and emotional skills.
Would my teen benefit from this group?
For children and teens summer can be a time that is difficult to fill up with structured activities, which can lead to your child or teen spending a lot of time on devices and a depletion in social interaction. If you believe your teen could benefit from extra support in building social skills, improving their confidence, solidifying their sense of self, and learning strategies to become more emotionally flexible and adaptable, our Hope Quest Camp could be a great fit for them!
